Technical Information: Powertrain
The single most important thing when talking about the power aspect of drifting is torque. To keep your tires spinning throughout a drift your car must have an adequate amount of torque. So in keeping with this basic idea here are some good upgrades to make to your powertrain.
Intake
When drifting, your car is going to be gasping for air if you are still using the stock intake system. So by increasing the amount of air entering your engine by way of an aftermarket intake system you will effectively increase horse power and torque.
Exhaust
First off you never want to buy an exhaust system with monster piping. Why you ask? Because by enlarger the diameter of your exhaust piping you are also losing back pressure which in turn causes you to lose torque. A good example of what to buy is the A'PEXi N1 dual exhaust system. The combination of not too large diameter piping and a straight back design makes this the perfect drifting exhaust system because it, not only, gives you an increase in horse power but it also not lose any torque.
Cams
Cams are a very good idea because they can give you substantial increases in torque. Although they are not as easy to install as the intake and exhaust systems and are more expensive they are well worth the price.
Pulley Kits
If you were to go to a drifting circuit in Japan you would discover that the majority of the cars were not running A/C. Why? Well because to spin the pulleys that run the air conditioning system takes power from the engine. Power which would be going to the wheels if the a/c was disconnected. But for those of you who want a/c there is another choice and they are called underdrive pulleys. By changing the size of the pulleys you can release some of the horse power locked up in those systems. A good maker of underdrive pulleys is unorthodoxracing . They make kits for most cars and run in the $200 range and claim to give you up to 40hp by way of their full racing kit.
Turbo Kits
A turbine is the single most powerful upgrade you can get. But you have to think before you buy. There are many turbines on the market that claim they can get you amounts of up to 200 extra horse power. At first glance that sounds good right? Well it's not. A turbine that gets you 200hp is gonna take a long time to spool up and that's a no-no for a drifter. You want to run a turbine that spools up really fast so you can break your tires traction quickly. In my opinion the best turbine kit for the job is the HKS GT 2503. This turbine will not get you a ton of horse power, only about 60 more but its strong point is the speed at which it responds. All in all if your car has a stock turbine (FC3S RX-7, MR2) then you really do not need an upgraded one but it does help.
Clutch/Flywheel
This is a very important upgrade especially if you drift by way of the clutching technique. If you are running a stock clutch and flywheel then when you pop the clutch to cause traction loss you will be doing substantial damage to these system which were not designed for that kind of use. By upgrading the clutch and flywheel power will be transferred to the wheels at a much better rate and you will not have to worry about harming them.
